What is a ‘Special’ ?

A ‘Special’ is an unlicensed medicine available in the UK. Generally most medicines are licensed in the UK but to meet certain criteria for individual patients, the NHS allows the “tailor-made” manufacture of medicines. Also if available, the importation of certain products from outside the UK.

A ‘Special’ may only be manufactured once a doctor has prescribed it for a patient and a pharmacist may only supply a ‘Special’ if no licensed alternative is available.

Who would need a ‘Special’ ?

• A patient with allergies
• Difficulty with swallowing (dysphagia)
• On a liquid diet
• Tailor-made strengths or dosage form required
